8th ANNUAL BASQUE CULINARY CENTER MEETING: TRANSFORMING SOCIETY THROUGH GASTRONOMY

The Basque Culinary Center annual meeting is an important appointment that brings together the most renowned chefs and gastronomy professionals to identify global challenges, share knowledge and exchange views on world gastronomy.

This year’s meeting was hosted by chef Massimo Bottura in his hometown of Modena. Bottura's restaurant Osteria Francescana took the winning spot at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants for the second time in 2018, and the acclaimed chef is also the founder of the Food for Soul Project. He was joined at the meeting by chefs such as Dominique Crenn (also jury and speaker), Joan Roca (jury, speaker), Manoella Buffara (jury, speaker), Mauro Colagreco (jury), Yoshihiro Narisawa (jury), Enrique Olvera (jury), Andoni Luis Aduriz (jury) and Gastón Acurio (speaker).

2018 PRIZE GOES TO JOCK ZONFRILLO, THE AWARD FOR CHEFS WHO IMPROVE SOCIETY THROUGH GASTRONOMY

10 top international chefs shortlisted for the 2018 Basque Culinary World Prize included:

The annual prize, now in it’s 3rd year, showcases culinary professionals who have a positive impact on society through gastronomy. Scottish-born, Australian-based chef Jock Zonfrillo was recognized with the prestigious award for his work in preserving and safeguarding the culinary culture of the native people of Australia. Since his move to the country in 2000, he has visited hundreds of remote communities to understand the origins of ingredients and their cultural significance.

Speaking of his win, the President of the jury, Joan Roca, said: "For more than 15 years, Jack has sought to understand and promote one of the oldest cultures of the planet."

Zonfrillo and his scientific team of his Orana Foundation analyze and document their findings in an extensive database, and to date have identified 2000 foods, with the ambition of logging a total of 15,000.

Promoted by the Basque Culinary Center in San Sebastian, Jock Zonfrillo was awarded 100,000 Euros, which he will put to a good cause of his choosing.
